Rejoinder to Honorable Prime Minister's Allegation against Professor Muhammad Yunus regarding Rampal Coal Plant Issue at World Economic Forum

Several local newspapers and other media outlets have carried comments allegedly made by Honorable Prime Minister on 21 January 2017 about the issue of Rampal Coal Plant being raised at the World Economic Forum. According to the media reports, Honorable Prime Minister said, “Yunus and company are responsible for bringing the Rampal issue to World Economic Forum (WEF) in Davos by spending money." Several papers report that she has alleged that questions raised by former US Vice President Al Gore during a panel on the environment in which Hon Prime Minister also participated, were instigated by Professor Yunus.

We are deeply shocked and saddened by these alleged statements by Honorable Prime Minister especially implicating that someone of Mr Gore's stature, a former Vice President of the United States, could be "bought" to make such comments.

The claim that Professor Yunus paid money to WEF to make this a topic of discussion is equally false and outrageous. Such a claim and allegation should be supported with concrete evidence when it is coming from a high office such as that of the Honorable PM against a distinguished citizen of Bangladesh, a distinguished citizen of another country, and a reputed global institution like WEF.

We strongly protest these false and baseless allegations against Professor Yunus.

বিশ্ব অর্থনৈতিক ফোরামে রামপাল কয়লা কেন্দ্র নিয়ে উত্থাপিত প্রশ্ন প্রসঙ্গে প্রফেসর ইউনূসের বিরুদ্ধে মাননীয় প্রধানমন্ত্রীর অভিযোগের প্রতিবসম্প্রতি দেশের কয়েকটি পত্রিকা ও মিডিয়ায় বিশ্ব অর্থনৈতিক ফোরামে রামপাল কয়লা কেন্দ্র নিয়ে প্রশ্ন ওঠা প্রসঙ্গে মাননীয় প্রধানমন্ত্রীর মন্তব্য বলে একটি সংবাদ প্রকাশিত হয়েছে। প্রকাশিত সংবাদ অনুযায়ী ২১ জানুয়ারী ২০১৭ মাননীয় প্রধানমন্ত্রী মন্তব্য করেছেন, “ইউনূস ও তাঁর লোকজন টাকা খরচ করে দাভোসে বিশ্ব অর্থনৈতিক ফোরামে রামপাল কয়লা কেন্দ্র নিয়ে প্রশ্ন উঠিয়েছেন।” কয়েকটি পত্রিকা এই মর্মে রিপোর্ট করেছে যে, মাননীয় প্রধানমন্ত্রীর অংশগ্রহণে বিশ্ব অর্থনৈতিক ফোরামে পরিবেশ বিষয়ক একটি প্যানেল আলোচনায় প্রাক্তন মার্কিন ভাইস প্রেসিডেন্ট আল-গোর কর্তৃক রামপাল কয়লা কেন্দ্র নিয়ে প্রশ্ন তোলার পেছনে প্রফেসর ইউনূসের প্ররোচনা রয়েছে বলে প্রধানমন্ত্রী অভিযোগ করেছেন।

মাননীয় প্রধানমন্ত্রীর এই মন্তব্যে (পত্রিকার সংবাদ অনুযায়ী) আমরা গভীরভাবে মর্মাহত ও দুঃখ বোধ করছি, বিশেষ করে মার্কিন যুক্তরাষ্ট্রের প্রাক্তন ভাইস প্রেসিডেন্ট আল-গোরের মতো ব্যক্তির বিরুদ্ধে প্রধানমন্ত্রীর এই অভিযোগে যে তাঁর মতো ব্যক্তিকে এ ধরনের বক্তব্য দেবার জন্য “কেনা” যায়।

প্রফেসর ইউনূস রামপাল প্রসঙ্গটি আলোচনার বিষয়বস্তু হিসেবে নিয়ে আসতে বিশ্ব অর্থনৈতিক ফোরামকে টাকা দিয়েছেন - এই অভিযোগটিও একইভাবে মিথ্যা ও মর্যাদা হানিকর। মাননীয় প্রধানমন্ত্রীর মতো দেশের সর্বোচ্চ পর্যায়ের কারো নিকট থেকে তাঁর নিজের দেশের একজন বিশিষ্ট ব্যক্তি, অন্য কোন দেশের একজন বিশিষ্ট ব্যক্তি এবং বিশ্ব অর্থনৈতিক ফোরামের মতো বিশ্বখ্যাত একটি প্রতিষ্ঠানের বিরুদ্ধে এ ধরনের কোন দাবী ও অভিযোগ অবশ্যই উপযুক্ত তথ্য-প্রমাণ দ্বারা সমর্থিত হওয়া উচিত বলে আমরা মনে করি।

আমরা প্রফেসর ইউনূসের বিরুদ্ধে এই মিথ্যা ও ভিত্তিহীন অভিযোগের তীব্র প্রতিবাদ জানাচ্ছি।
