A Rejoinder to Claim of the Law Minister Regarding Professor Yunus and Clinton Foundation

A recent report published in Janakantha newspaper and a few other dailies on January 7, 2017 drew our attention.  According to those reports, the Law Minister of Bangladesh Mr Anisul Huq at a function recently stated that President-elect of the United States Mr Donald Trump will investigate Professor Muhammad Yunus’ contributions to Hillary Clinton’s election fund.  According to the report, the Minister claimed that Yunus donated money to Clinton Foundation before the US elections and later that money was spent for Hillary Clinton’s campaign. He said that while this news was published in various international media, Professor Yunus did not give any explanation. He further stated that Professor Yunus had a dream to bring down the government by using his good offices with Hillary once she was  elected  US president. “Now that Trump is elected, he will look into the details of how much Yunus gave Hillary for election," he is quoted as saying in the report.
This is a very unfortunate statement from a responsible person, all the more  the Minister of Law, who is the top person to ensure application of law for all citizens, and protect citizens from misuse or abuse of law by anyone in the country. The accusation brought against Professor Yunus by the Minister about Professor Yunus' contribution to Hillary Clinton's campaign is blatantly false and baseless. He has never donated any money to Hillary Clinton's or anyone else's election fund either in Bangladesh or abroad.

The Minister's assertion that Prof. Yunus did not issue any statement denying this accusation is alsoincorrect.  Yunus Centre issued statements on April 20, 2016 and on August 31, 2016 stating clearly that Professor Yunus has never made any contributions to Hillary Clinton or her campaign or to the Clinton Foundation. In that statement Yunus Centre had drawn attention that the only contributions recorded in the Clinton Foundation website are from Grameen America under the category of contributions made to Clinton Foundation related exclusively to "membership, sponsorship, and conference fees" to attend the Clinton Global Initiative, which is an international conference organized annually.  The contributions related to fees was paid by the then-President of Grameen America Mr Vidar Jorgensen for attending the conference over a period of ten years. A statement of Mr Vidar Jorgensen was also attached to the rejoinder. We again Yunus Centre's earlier statements as well as Mr Jorgensens with this rejoinder.  This payment of fee by the then President of Grameen America has nothing to do with Professor Muhammad Yunus and there is no mention anywhere in the website about any contribution from Professor Yunus.

According to the report, the Minister also made the statement at that recently held function that President elect Donald Trump will investigate Professor Muhammad Yunus’ contributions to Hillary Clinton’s election fund.  This is a fabricated and baseless claim. No such investigation has been announced by the Trump administration-in-waiting.

Professor Yunus does not have nor ever had any "dream" to bring down a government in Bangladesh or anywhere in the world by using his good offices with Hillary once she is elected the US president.  The minister said that "Now Trump is elected and he will look into details how much money Yunus gave Hillary for election." This too is a baseless and irresponsible statement from a responsible person.  As the nation’s chief protector of Law, the Minister should either prove his charges or withdraw the false statement.

গত ৭ জানুয়ারী  ২০১৭ দৈনিক জনকণ্ঠ সহ কয়েকটি দৈনিক পত্রিকায় প্রকাশিত একটি সংবাদের  প্রতি আমাদের দৃষ্টি আকৃষ্ট হয়েছে। এই সংবাদ অনুযায়ী আইনমন্ত্রী মহোদয় সম্প্রতি একটি অনুষ্ঠানে এই মর্মে মন্তব্য করেছেন যে, মার্কিন যুক্তরাষ্ট্রের নবনির্বাচিত প্রেসিডেন্ট ডোনাল্ড ট্রাম্প হিলারী ক্লিনটনের নির্বাচনী তহবিলে প্রফেসর মুহাম্মদ ইউনূসের “চাঁদা প্রদানের” বিষয়টি তদন্ত করে দেখবেন। আইনমন্ত্রী মহোদয়ের দাবী অনুযায়ী প্রফেসর ইউনূস যুক্তরাষ্ট্রের প্রেসিডেন্ট নির্বাচনের আগেই ক্লিনটন ফাউন্ডেশনে এই অনুদান দিয়েছিলেন যা পরবর্তীতে হিলারী ক্লিনটনের নির্বাচনী প্রচারণায় ব্যবহৃত হয়। আইনমন্ত্রী মহোদয়ের মতে, বিষয়টি বিভিন্ন আন্তর্জাতিক মিডিয়ায় প্রচারিত হলেও প্রফেসর ইউনূস এ বিষয়ে কোন ব্যাখ্যা দেননি। তিনি আরো বলেন, হিলারী ক্লিনটন এবার প্রেসিডেন্ট নির্বাচিত হলে তাঁর সাথে সুসম্পর্কের সুবাদে প্রফেসর ইউনূস এই সরকারকে ক্ষমতা থেকে নামানোর স্বপ্ন দেখছিলেন।

একজন দায়িত্বশীল ব্যক্তির নিকট থেকে, বিশেষ করে দেশের আইনমন্ত্রীর নিকট থেকে যিনি দেশের নাগরিকদের জন্য আইনের শাসন নিশ্চিত করা ও আইনের অপব্যবহার থেকে নাগরিকদের রক্ষা করার সর্বোচ্চ দায়িত্বপ্রাপ্ত ব্যক্তি - এ ধরনের বক্তব্য সত্যিই দুর্ভাগ্যজনক। প্রফেসর ইউনূস কর্তৃক হিলারী ক্লিনটনের নির্বাচনী তহবিলে চাঁদা প্রদানের আইনমন্ত্রী মহোদয়ের অভিযোগটি একটি ভিত্তিহীন ও নির্জলা মিথ্যা। কোন প্রচার মাধ্যমেই প্রফেসর ইউনূসের বিরুদ্ধে এরকম কোন অভিযোগ তোলা হয়নি। তিনি কখনোই হিলারী ক্লিনটনের নির্বাচনী তহবিলে কিংবা দেশে বা বিদেশে কারো নির্বাচনী তহবিলে কখনো কোন চাঁদা দেননি। প্রফেসর ইউনূস এই অভিযোগ অস্বীকার করে কোন বিবৃতি দেননি বলে আইনমন্ত্রী মহোদয়ের বক্তব্যও সঠিক নয়। গত ২০ এপ্রিল ২০১৬ ও ৩১ আগস্ট ২০১৬ তারিখে ইউনূস সেন্টার থেকে প্রদত্ত দু’টি বিবৃতিতে পরিস্কারভাবে বলা হয় যে, প্রফেসর ইউনূস হিলারী ক্লিনটনকে বা তাঁর নির্বাচনী প্রচারণায় বা ক্লিনটন ফাউন্ডেশনকে কখনোই কোন অর্থ দেননি। ইউনূস সেন্টারের ঐ বিবৃতিতে আরো বলা হয় যে, ক্লিনটন ফাউন্ডেশনের ওয়েব সাইটে উল্লেখিত উক্ত ফাউন্ডেশনকে প্রদত্ত একমাত্র অর্থ প্রদানের বিষয়টি ছিল গ্রামীণ আমেরিকার, যা ক্লিনটন গ্লোবাল ইনিশিয়েটিভের প্রতি বছর আয়োজিত আন্তর্জাতিক সম্মেলনে যোগদানের জন্য “সদস্যপদ, স্পন্সরশীপ ও কনফারেন্স ফি” ক্যাটেগরীতে দেয়া হয়েছিল। গ্রামীণ আমেরিকার তৎকালীন প্রেসিডেন্ট জনাব ভিডার জরগেনসেন ঐ সব সম্মেলনে যোগদানের জন্য ঐ বাৎসরিক চাঁদা ১০ বছর ধরে দিয়েছিলেন। ইউনূস সেন্টারের ঐ প্রতিবাদের সাথে জনাব ভিডার জরগেনসেনের বিবৃতিও সংযুক্ত করা হয়েছিল। আমরা এই প্রতিবাদ লিপির সাথে তাঁর বিবৃতিটি আবারো সংযুক্ত করছি।

গ্রামীণ আমেরিকার প্রেসিডেন্টের প্রদত্ত অর্থ প্রদানের সাথে প্রফেসর ইউনূসের কোন সম্পর্ক নেই এবং ক্লিনটন ফাউন্ডেশনের ওয়েব সাইটের কোথাও প্রফেসর ইউনূসের চাঁদা প্রদান সংক্রান্ত কোন তথ্যই নেই।

মার্কিন যুক্তরাষ্ট্রের নবনির্বাচিত প্রেসিডেন্ট ডোনাল্ড ট্রাম্প হিলারী ক্লিনটনের নির্বাচনী তহবিলে প্রফেসর মুহাম্মদ ইউনূসের “চাঁদা প্রদানের” বিষয়টি তদন্ত করে দেখবেন বলে আইনমন্ত্রী মহোদয়ের সাম্প্রতিক বক্তব্যটি একান্তই কল্পনাপ্রসূত ও ভিত্তিহীন। ট্রাম্প প্রশাসন এ ধরনের কোন ঘোষণাই দেয়নি।

হিলারী ক্লিনটন মার্কিন যুক্তরাষ্ট্রের প্রেসিডেন্ট নির্বাচিত হলে তাঁর সাথে সুসম্পর্কের সুবাদে বাংলাদেশের কোন সরকারকে বা পৃথিবীর কোথাও কোন সরকারকে ক্ষমতা থেকে হটানোর কোন চিন্তাও প্রফেসর ইউনূস কখনো করেন না।

একজন দায়িত্বশীল ব্যক্তির নিকট থেকে এটা একটা দায়িত্বহীন বক্তব্য ছাড়া আর কিছু নয়। মন্ত্রী মহোদয় বলেছেন, “এখন যেহেতু ট্রাম্প নির্বাচিত হয়েছেন তিনি এখন খতিয়ে দেখবেন হিলারীকে তাঁর নির্বাচনের জন্য ইউনূস কতো টাকা দিয়েছিলেন।”

আমরা আশা করবো, দেশের সর্বোচ্চ আইন রক্ষাকারী হিসেবে আইনমন্ত্রী মহোদয় হয় একটি নির্দিষ্ট সময়ের মধ্যে জাতির সামনে তাঁর অভিযোগসমূহ প্রমাণ করবেন, অথবা তাঁর মিথ্যা বক্তব্যগুলি প্রত্যাহার করে নেবেন।
