Norwegian Nobel Committee reasserts its support for 2006 Prize Winner Professor Muhammad Yunus and Grameen Bank
On 27th of January 2011, the Norwegian Nobel committee has reiterated its support to Professor Yunus and Grameen Bank, in the light of the charges made in the Danish documentary broadcast in Norway "Caught in Microcro-debt", and then "in various forms in Bangladesh".
Indeed, in a letter signed by Geir Lundestad, Secretary of the Norwegian Nobel Committee, explains that the "vetting process for Professor Yunus (when he was jointly awarded the Nobel Peace prize with the Grameen Bank) was actually more thorough than it is normally the case. The committee consulted several top international and Norwegian experts on [Professor] Yunus and Grameen Bank. When a bank has 7-8 million borrowers, it is easy to find isolated negative examples. It was only when the Committee had pieced this larger and very positive picture together that the Committee came to the conclusion it did".
We warmly welcome this support from the Norwegian Nobel Committee, who represents a major support within this context. We have no doubt that this present declaration will serve as a strong proof of the integrity of both Professor Yunus and the Grameen Bank.The statement in full can be found here.
