The first Nursing College of Grameen initiative is named as "Grameen Caledonian College of Nursing". The college has been set up with joint funding from Nike Foundation of USA and Glasgow Caledonian University, Scotland, U.K. The Grameen Healthcare Trust (GHT) supports the funding arrangements of the College while the Grameen Health Care Services Ltd. (GHS), oversees the establishment of the college as a social business company of the Grameen Family.

Location:The temporary campus of the first Nursing College "Grameen Caledonian College of Nursing" is located at the Grameen Bank Complex at Mirpur, Dhaka. The aim is to shift the college to its permanent campus, a suitable location near to in Dhaka, within maximum three years.

The Nursing College has now been admitting students since March 2010 and currently has received four cohorts of students with the first cohort graduated in March 2013.

Genesis, formation and objectives of Grameen Caledonian College of Nursing:The Grameen Caledonian College of Nursing will become the part of the development of the Grameen University of Health Science and Technology and is being taken forward in partnership with the Grameen Health Care Trust and Glasgow Caledonian University. Both organizations share common values and principles in the issues that incorporate a social inclusion agenda and promote efforts to improve the health and well being of the poor. Professor Yunus is the Chancellor of Glasgow Caledonian University

It is proposed to establish the Nursing and Midwifery College as a Centre of Excellence providing programmes for the education and training for nurses at an international standard with an emphasis on whole person care and integrated approaches to the delivery of care. In this way it is expected that not only will there be an increase in the number of nurses in the country but also there will be an improvement in the quality of care that patients receive ensuring that nurses in Bangladesh are actively engaged in preventative and a restorative activities that will promote health.

The new College will evolve to become a genuine force for vital health development in Bangladesh, increasing the quality and quantity of health education and delivering a step by step increase in the number of well educated health professionals throughout the country. The College is structured as a social business with the aim of becoming sustainable by 2016. As with all good universities, it will provide a focus for discussion, debate and action across the health agenda and will be integrated with activities in the UK. Staff and students from both countries will engage with each other. Placements opportunities in the community and with its partners both in Scotland and Bangladesh have been put in place and systems are set up to facilitate the contribution of volunteers.

Basic principles adopted for setting the GCCN:

  • Grameen Healthcare Trust in cooperation with Glasgow Caledonian University Scotland UK has established the first nursing college.
  • The title of the College  is “ The Grameen Caledonian College of Nursing”
  • The College commenced from 1st day of March 2010 when it admitted the first cohort of diploma in Nursing Science and Midwifery students.
  • A further 10 colleges of nursing are planned across the country.
  • The Principal of first nursing College is appointed from Glasgow Caledonian University and the University bears her cost.
  • The Nursing College is compatible with international standards and is following the Bangladesh Nursing Council (BNC) curriculum which has been developed to educate students with internationally accepted competencies and standards of practice.
  • The College meets all the requirements of the Bangladesh Nursing Council (BNC) and other Government agencies for the delivery of the Diploma in Nursing and Midwifery programme.
  • The College is currently seeking approval to offer BSc basic and post basic BSc programme.
  • The College plans to introduce a Nurse teacher  training programme at Masters level
  • Students follow the national curriculum by the BNC in English
  • During the initial phase of development while Grameen is considering establishing its own hospital, the Grameen Caledonian Nursing College has identified suitable clinical placements in local government Hospitals and specialist hospitals including Central Hospital, ICDDRB, and Lamb Primary Health Care centres. It also places students in the Grameen Kalyan clinics and Grameen Health Care Services eye hospitals.

At this initial stage of development the College is located in rented accommodation. It is proposed that within three years the college will have its own premise which is a requirement of BNC.
