Tenth One Young World Summit Held in London - Yunus Urged Youth to Reversing the Environmental Degradation and Wealth Concentration

Nobel Laureate Professor Muhammad Yunus and Her Royal Highness Meghan Markle, Duchess of Sussex together on stage during the opening ceremony of the One Young World summit at the Royal Albert Hall, in London on 22 October 2019. The event is described as a “global forum for young leaders” and brings together 2,000 people from more than 190 countries. Professor Muhammad Yunus has been attending this event as Counsellor since 2010 when the summit began.

The 10th One Young World Summit took place in London this year from October 22 to 25, 2019. One Young World is a leading forum for youth which annually brings together over 2000 young leaders and change makers from over 190 countries to interact with Counsellors who are prominent persons from around the globe, as a way to accelerate social change. Nobel Laureate Professor Muhammad Yunus attended the Summit as a Counsellor. He was invited to play this role in all the ten Summits held since it was launched in 2010.

The Opening Ceremony of the Summit was held at the Royal Albert Hall in London, one of the United Kingdom's most distinctive buildings, on the evening of October 22. Mayor of London Sadiq Khan made the Opening Address. The Duchess of Sussex, Royal Highness Meghan Markle was the Guest of Honour at the event. She shared the stage with Professor Yunus and other personalities such as Former President of Ireland Mary Robinson, Musician and Activist Bob Geldof.

The Summit took place at Westminster Central Hall. Professor Yunus addressed a plenary session entitled "Poverty Alleviation: Can innovation solve economic inequality?" advising the young people to envision the world they want to create to challenge the existing institutions and policies that are failing to address the climate crisis and unequal distribution of wealth. He encouraged them to becoming entrepreneurs, instead of being job-seekers. He said jobs limit human creativity. He pointed out that the young generation is the biggest hope for reversing the climate catastrophe that we are in the middle of. He warned the youth if we do not act on an emergency basis we would no longer have a planet to live on. 

Professor Yunus was accompanied by a youth delegation of ten from Bangladesh selected through a competitive process undertaken by Yunus Centre.

Professor Yunus held an exclusive Question and Answer Session at the Queen Elizabethe II Theatre. He answered questions on microcredit, social business and the practical issues and challenges faced in setting up of social businesses.

Other celebrities who addressed the event were founder of Virgin Group Sir Richard Branson, former Prime Minister of Norway Gro Harlem Brundtland, First Lady of Colombia María Juliana Ruiz, former UN Under Secretary Michael Møller, Former British Prime Minister Sir John Major, Environmentalist Dr Jane Goodall, five-time Paralympic Champion Ellie Simmonds, and Co-Founder of Twitter Biz Stone.

British author J. K. Rowling gave a keynote address to the delegates.

At the Closing Session, Professor Yunus was invited to announce the venue of next year’s One Young World Summit to be held in Munich and invite the Deputy Mayor of Munich Manuel Pritzl on stage to make the welcome speech, thereby bringing this year’s Summit to an end.

লন্ডনে অনুষ্ঠিত হলো ১০ম ওয়ান ইয়ং ওয়ার্ল্ড সামতরুণদেরকে পরিবেশ বিপর্যয় ও সম্পদ কেন্দ্রীকরণের বর্তমান ধারা উল্টে দিতে প্রফেসর ইউনূসের আহ্বানঅক্টোবর ২২-২৫, ২০১৯ লন্ডনে অনুষ্ঠিত হলো ১০ম বার্ষিক ওয়ান ইয়ং ওয়ার্ল্ড শীর্ষ সম্মেলন। ওয়ান ইয়ং ওয়ার্ল্ড প্রতি বছর পৃথিবীর ১৯০টির বেশী দেশ থেকে ২,০০০ এর অধিক তরুণ-তরুণী ও চেঞ্জ মেকারকে সমবেত করে যেখানে এই তরুণ নেতৃবৃন্দ সমাজে ইতিবাচক পরিবর্তন আনার লক্ষ্যে সমগ্র পৃথিবী থেকে আগত বিশ্ববিশ্রুত উপদেষ্টাদের সাথে আলোচনা করে ও তাঁদের পরামর্শ গ্রহণ করে। নোবেল লরিয়েট প্রফেসর মুহাম্মদ ইউনূস এ বছরও উপদেষ্টা হিসেবে শীর্ষ সম্মেলনে যোগ দেন। উল্লেখ্য যে, ২০১০ সালে চালু ওয়ান ইয়ং ওয়ার্ল্ড সামিটের শুরু থেকে এ পর্যন্ত প্রতিটি সম্মেলনে তাঁকে উপদেষ্টা হিসেবে অংশ নিতে সামিটের পক্ষ থেকে আমন্ত্রণ জানানো হচ্ছে।

অক্টোবর ২২ লন্ডনের বিখ্যাত রয়্যাল অ্যালবার্ট হলে সম্মেলন আরম্ভ হয়। লন্ডনের মেয়র সাদিক খান সম্মেলনে উদ্বোধনী বক্তব্য রাখেন। ডাচেস অব সাসেক্স মহামান্য মেগান মার্কেল সম্মানিত অতিথি হিসেবে সামিটে অংশ নেন। তিনি প্রফেসর ইউনূস, আয়ারল্যান্ডের প্রাক্তন প্রেসিডেন্ট মেরী রবিনসন এবং বিশিষ্ট সঙ্গীতজ্ঞ ও সমাজকর্মী বব গেলডফের মতো বিশিষ্ট ব্যক্তিবৃন্দের সাথে একই মঞ্চে উপস্থিত ছিলেন।

মূল সম্মেলন পর্ব অনুষ্ঠিত হয় ওয়েস্টমিনিস্টার সেন্ট্রাল হলে। প্রফেসর ইউনূস “দারিদ্র বিমোচন: উদ্ভাবনী কর্মকান্ডের দ্বারা অর্থনৈতিক অসমতা দুর করা কি সম্ভব?” শীর্ষক একটি প্লেনারী সেশনে ভাষণ দেন যেখানে তিনি তরুণদেরকে তারা যে ধরনের পৃথিবীর সৃষ্টি করতে চায় তা কল্পনা করতে আহ্বান করেন যাতে তারা বিদ্যমান বিভিন্ন প্রতিষ্ঠান ও নীতিসমূহকে চ্যালেঞ্জ করতে পারে যেগুলো জলবায়ু সংকট ও সম্পদের অসম বন্টনের মতো সমস্যাগুলো দুর করতে ক্রমাগতভাবে ব্যর্থ হচ্ছে। তিনি তরুণদেরকে চাকরির পেছনে না ছুটে বরং উদ্যোক্তা হতে পরামর্শ দেন। তিনি বলেন, চাকরি মানুষের সৃষ্টিশীলতাকে সীমাবদ্ধ করে ফেলে। তিনি যুক্তি দেখান যে, পৃথিবী বর্তমানে যে জলবায়ু বিপর্যয়ের মধ্য দিয়ে যাচ্ছে তা থেকে তরুণ সমাজই বিশ্বকে রক্ষা করতে পারে। তিনি তরুণদেরকে এই বলে সতর্ক করেন যে, তারা যদি এ বিষয়ে এখনই তৎপর না হয় তাহলে এই পৃথিবী অচিরেই বসবাসের অযোগ্য হয়ে পড়বে।

সম্মেলনে প্রফেসর ইউনূসের সাথে বাংলাদেশ থেকে অংশ নেয় ১০ সদস্যের এক তরুণ প্রতিনিধিদল। বরাবরের মতো ইউনূস সেন্টার কর্তৃক একটি প্রতিযোগিতামূলক প্রক্রিয়ার মধ্য দিয়ে এই অংশগ্রহণকারীদেরকে বাছাই করা হয়।

এছাড়া প্রফেসর ইউনূস দ্বিতীয় কুইন এলিজাবেথ হলে একটি বিশেষ প্রশ্নোত্তর পর্বে অংশ নেন যেখানে তিনি ক্ষুদ্রঋণ, সামাজিক ব্যবসা এবং সামাজিক ব্যবসা গড়ে তুলতে কী কী বাস্তব সমস্যা ও চ্যালেঞ্জের সম্মুখীন হতে হয় তা নিয়ে বিস্তারিত আলোচনা করেন।

এই অনুষ্ঠানে আরো যে সকল বিশিষ্ট ব্যক্তি বক্তব্য রাখেন তাঁদের মধ্যে ছিলেন ভার্জিন গ্রুপের প্রতিষ্ঠাতা স্যার রিচার্ড ব্র্যানসন, নরওয়ের প্রাক্তন প্রধানমন্ত্রী গ্রো হারলেম ব্রান্ড্টল্যান্ড, কলম্বিয়ার ফার্স্ট লেডী মারিয়া জুলিয়ানা রুইজ, জাতি সংঘের প্রাক্তন আন্ডার সেক্রেটারী মাইকেল মোলার, ব্রিটেনের প্রাক্তন প্রধানমন্ত্রী স্যার জন মেজর, বিশিষ্ট পরিবেশবিদ ড. জেন গুডঅল, পাঁচ বারের প্যারালিম্পিক চ্যাম্পিয়ন এলি সিমন্ডস এবং টুইটারের সহ-প্রতিষ্ঠাতা বিজ স্টোন।

প্রখ্যাত ব্রিটিশ ঔপনাস্যিক জে. কে. রলিং সামিটের প্রতিনিধিদের উদ্দেশ্যে একটি মূল ভাষণ প্রদান করেন।

সমাপনী সেশনে প্রফেসর ইউনূসকে আগামী বছরের ওয়ান ইয়ং ওয়ার্ল্ড সামিটের ভেন্যু হিসেবে মিউনিখের নাম ঘোষণা করতে আমন্ত্রণ জানানো হয়। একই সাখে প্রফেসর ইউনূস মিউনিখের ডেপুটি মেয়র ম্যানুয়েল প্রিটজলকে তাঁর স্বাগত ভাষণ দিতে মঞ্চে আমন্ত্রণ জানান এবং সব শেষে এ বছরের ওয়ান ইয়ং ওয়ার্ল্ড সামিটের সমাপ্তি ঘোষণা করেন।
