Yunus to Deliver Lok Sabha Memorial Lecture
Nobel laureate Prof Muhammad Yunus will deliver a lecture on "Social Business: A New Business to Change Our Economic Framework" at the Central Hall of the Indian Parliament on December 9 next.Official sources in New Delhi said that Prof Yunus, the managing director of Grameen Bank, would deliver the second Prof Hiren Mukherjee Memorial Parliamentary Lecture this year.
The annual lecture series was instituted last year by Somnath Mukherjee, the then Speaker of the Indian Parliament's Lower House 'Lok Sabha', in the memory of Prof Hiren Mukherjee – an eminent Communist parliamentarian of India.
Prof Mukherjee passed away in 2004.
Nobel laureate economist Prof. Amartya Sen had delivered the first Prof Hiren Mukherjee Memorial Lecture in the Central Hall of the Indian Parliament last year.
Apart from the Members of Parliament, the cream of India's political class and intelligentsia will also be in the audience when Prof Yunus will deliver the lecture at 6-00 p.m. Indian Standard Time on December 9 next.
The Indian Vice-President Hamid Ansari, who is also the chairman of the Parliament' Upper House 'Rajya Sabha;, will preside over the event and Prime Minister Manmohan Singh will be the Chief Guest. The Lok Sabha Speaker Meira Kumar will deliver the welcome address.
