Professor Yunus Invited to Deliver Lecture at Indian Parliament
Nobel Laureate Professor Muhammad Yunus has been invited by Speaker of Indian Lok Sabha, Smt. Meira Kumar, to deliver the second Prof. Hiren Mukerjee Memorial Annual Parliamentary Lecture at the Indian Parliament during its Winter Session this year.The Lecture is named after Professor Hiren Mukherjee, a prominent member of the West Bengal Communist Party. Professor Mukherjee, who died in 2004, was five times member of the Lok Sabha from 1952 to 1977, a deputy leader of the Communist party in Parliament (1952-64) and then its leader from 1964 to 1967. He had served in bodies as disparate as the All India Congress Committee (1938-39) and the National Council of the Communist Party of India (1958-68).
The date and time of the lecture has been finalised with mutual consultation. Professor Yunus' Lecture will take place at 6 PM on Wednesday on the 9th of December 2009, in the central hall of the Parliament House in New Delhi.
The first Prof Hiren Mukherjee Memorial Parliamentary Lecture was delivered by Prof Amartya Sen in 2008.
