Two More Branches Opened in California Bringing Grameen America Total to 23 in 15 US Cities

Nobel Laureate Professor Muhammad Yunus inaugurated two new branches at Long Beach and Fresno, a city 225 miles north of Los Angeles. Long Beach branch is funded by East West Banks and Fresno branch is funded by the Bank of the West. Dominic Ng, founder, Chairman, and CEO of East West Bank and Andrea Jung, CEO and President, Grameen America, and the senior executives of both banks attended the ribbon cutting ceremony on September 18th.
Fresno branch is funded by Bank of the West, a fully owned subsidiary of European banking giant BNP Paribas. The ribbon cutting ceremony took place with great fanfare on September 19, attended by Nobel Laureate Professor Muhammad Yunus, CEO, Nandita Bakshi of Bank of the West, a Bangladeshi born Indian American, Andrea Jung, CEO of Grameen America, along with senior executives of both banks, and distinguished women leaders and entrepreneurs of the city.
With the addition of these two new branches Grameen America's branch total comes to 23. In its 11 years of operation starting from Jackson Heights, Queens, NY, it has invested a total of $1.26 billion to reach out to 120 ,000 borrowers, all low-income women of the USA, in 15 cities. All branches over 4 years of age are all financially self-sustaining. The repayment rate in Grameen America remains 99%.
Grameen America plans to reach 250,000 low-income women in the US and invest $ 4 billion in the next five years.
In the United States, women of all income levels receive just 4% of loan dollars and 1 in 4 U.S. households are either unbanked or under banked.
The Grameen America with addition of two new branches now has 6 branches in California. California has the highest poverty rate in the United States (as per the Census Bureau). Grameen America has over 22,000 borrowers and disbursed over $192.3 million in loans in California.
At the Long Beach branch opening, Mr. Dominic Ng, Chairman, President and CEO of East West Bank applauded Professor Yunus’s relentless vision towards poverty alleviation. East West Bank has contributed around $2M to assist in the operational set up of the branch. The Long Beach will be the third branch in Los Angeles after Boyle Heights and Pico Union.
At the Fresno branch opening, Bank of the West CEO Nandita Bakhshi congratulated the management regarding the success and collaboration with Grameen America. Fresno will be the first branch in the Central Valley. Bank of the West and BNP Paribas have contributed USD 500,000 towards the Fresno branch. Moreover, the Fresno Area Hispanic Foundation has provided the office space to house this upcoming branch.
Bank of West announced an expanded partnership with Grameen America investing USD 2 million to support the institutional goals. With an estimated 76,000 women in Fresno living in poverty this new branch will impact the community in providing women with the necessary resources to support their financial growth. Grameen America’s goal is to serve 500 women in its first year, disbursing USD 727,000 in microloans to low income female entrepreneurs. By the fifth year the target is to serve 7,000 women with USD 21million in disbursed loans.
The Nobel Laureate later attended the 5th Annual Power of Women in Business Conference, hosted by the Fresno Area Hispanic Foundation. Dora Westerland, CEO of the Fresno Area Hispanic Foundation moderated a panel discussion with Andrea Jung, Nandita Bakhshi, CEO of Bank of the West, along with Professor Yunus. Mayor Lee Brand, Mayor of the City of Fresno, who attended the conference, congratulated Professor Yunus for bringing Grameen America to his city. He committed has total support to the programme and wanted to have more branches in his city which is populated by poor farm laborers.
This women conference brought together an audience of 500 women entrepreneurs, in the Central Valley area, specifically highlighting women of color business-owners in the region.

ফ্রেসনো শাখাটির অর্থায়নকারী ব্যাংক অব দ্য ওয়েস্ট ইউরোপের অন্যতম বৃহত্তম ব্যাংক বিএনপি পারিবাসের পূর্ণ মালিকানাধীন একটি সাবসিডিয়ারী। সেপ্টেম্বর ১৯ নোবেল লরিয়েট প্রফেসর মুহাম্মদ ইউনূসের উপস্থিতিতে ফিতা কেটে সাড়ম্বরে শাখাটির উদ্বোধন করা হয়। উদ্বোধনী অনুষ্ঠানে আরো উপস্থিত ছিলেন ব্যাংক অব দ্য ওয়েস্টের প্রধান নির্বাহী বাংলাদেশী বংশোদ্ভ‚ত ভারতীয়-আমেরিকান নন্দিতা বকশী, গ্রামীণ আমেরিকার প্রধান নির্বাহী ও প্রেসিডেন্ট অ্যান্ড্রিয়া জাং, উভয় ব্যাংকের উর্ধ্বতন কর্মকর্তাবৃন্দ এবং শহরের গণ্যমান্য নারী নেত্রী ও উদ্যোক্তাগণ।
এই নতুন দু’টি শাখাসহ গ্রামীণ আমেরিকার শাখার সংখ্যা দাঁড়ালো ২৩টি। এগার বছর পূর্বে নিউ ইয়র্কের কুইন্সে অবস্থিত জ্যাকসন হাইট্সে তার কার্যক্রম শুরু করার পর প্রতিষ্ঠানটি এর পর্যন্ত মার্কিন যুক্তরাষ্ট্রের ১৫টি নগরীতে ১২০,০০০ হাজার নি¤œ আয়ের মহিলাকে ১২৬ কোটি মার্কিন ডলার ঋণ বিতরণ করেছে। চার বছরের বেশী বয়সী শাখাগুলোর সবকটিই আর্থিকভাবে স্বয়ংসম্পূর্ণ। গ্রামীণ আমেরিকার সার্বিক ঋণ আদায় হার ৯৯ শতাংশ।
প্রতিষ্ঠানটি আগামী ৫ বছরে ২৫০,০০০ দরিদ্র মার্কিন নারীর নিকট ৪০০ কোটি ডলার ঋণ বিতরণের পরিকল্পনা করছে।
উল্লেখ্য যে, মার্কিন যুক্তরাষ্ট্রে মোট ব্যাংক ঋণের মাত্র ৪ শতাংশ নারীদের কাছে পৌঁছায় এবং দেশটির প্রতি ৪টি গৃহস্থালীর ১টি ব্যাংকিং সুবিধা থেকে পুরোপুরি বা আংশিক বঞ্চিত।
নতুন এই দু’টি শাখাসহ ক্যালিফোর্নিয়ায় গ্রামীণ আমেরিকার শাখার সংখা দাঁড়ালো ৬টিতে। মার্কিন যুক্তরাষ্ট্রের জনসংখ্যা জরিপের তথ্য অনুযায়ী দেশটিতে দারিদ্রের হার সবচেয়ে বেশী ক্যালিফোর্নিয়ায়। এখানে গ্রামীণ আমেরিকার ঋণীর সংখ্যা ২২,০০০ যাঁদের নিকট প্রতিষ্ঠানটির মোট বিতরণকৃত ঋণের পরিমাণ ১৯.২৩ কোটি ডলার।
লং বীচ শাখাটি উদ্বোধন কালে ইস্ট ওয়েস্ট ব্যাংকের প্রেসিডেন্ট ও প্রধান নির্বাহী ডমিনিক এন.জি দারিদ্র বিমোচনে প্রফেসর ইউনূসের অন্তর্দৃষ্টি ও নিরলস প্রচেষ্টার ভ‚য়শী প্রশংসা করেন। ইস্ট ওয়েস্ট ব্যাংক গ্রামীণ আমেরিকার এই শাখাটি চালু করতে প্রায় ২০ লক্ষ মার্কিন ডলার সহায়তা দিয়েছে। বয়লে হাইট্স ও পিকো ইউনিয়নের পর লং বীচের এই শাখাটি ক্যালিফোর্নিয়ায় গ্রামীণ আমেরিকার তৃতীয় শাখা।
ফ্রেসনো শাখা উদ্বোধনের সময় ব্যাংক অব দ্য ওয়েস্টের প্রধান নির্বাহী নন্দিতা বকশী গ্রামীণ আমেরিকার সাফল্য এবং এর সাথে সহযোগিতার জন্য প্রতিষ্ঠানটির ব্যবস্থাপনাকে অভিনন্দন জানান। সেন্ট্রাল ভ্যালিতে ফ্রেসনোই গ্রামীণ আমেরিকার প্রথম শাখা। ফ্রেসনো শাখা প্রতিষ্ঠায় ব্যাংক অব দ্য ওয়েস্ট ও বিএনপি পারিবাস ৫ লক্ষ মার্কিন ডলার প্রদান করেছে। এছাড়া ফ্রেসনো এরিয়া হিসপানিক ফাউন্ডেশন শাখাটির অফিস স্থাপনের জন্য স্থান সরবরাহ করেছে।
ব্যাংক অব দ্য ওয়েস্ট গ্রামীণ আমেরিকাকে তার প্রাতিষ্ঠানিক লক্ষ্য অর্জনে সহায়তা করতে এর সাথে ২০ লক্ষ মার্কিন ডলারের একটি সম্প্রসারিত পার্টনারশীপ ঘোষণা করেছে। ফ্রেসনোয় বসবাসকারী প্রায় ৭৬,০০০ দরিদ্র নারীকে আর্থিক স্বচ্ছলতা অর্জনে এই শাখাটি প্রয়োজনীয় পুঁজি সহায়তা দেবে। গ্রামীণ আমেরিকা প্রথম বছরে এখানকার ৫০০ দরিদ্র নারী উদ্যোক্তাকে ৭২৭,০০০ ডলার ক্ষুদ্রঋণ সরবরাহ করবে। আগামী ৫ বছরে ফ্রেসনোর ৭,০০০ দরিদ্র নারীকে ২.১ কোটি ডলার ঋণ বিতরণের পরিকল্পনা রয়েছে প্রতিষ্ঠানটির।
এছাড়া নোবেল লরিয়েট প্রফেসর মুহাম্মদ ইউনূস ফ্রেসনো এরিয়া হিসপানিক ফাউন্ডেশন আয়োজিত ৫ম অ্যানুয়াল পাওয়ার অব উইমেন ইন বিজনেস কনফারেন্সে যোগ দেন। ফ্রেসনো এরিয়া হিসপানিক ফাউন্ডেশনের প্রধান নির্বাহী ডোরা ওয়েস্টারল্যান্ড সম্মেলনে একটি প্যানেল আলোচনা সঞ্চালনা করেন যেখানে যোগ দেন গ্রামীণ আমেরিকার প্রধান নির্বাহী ও প্রেসিডেন্ট অ্যান্ড্রিয়া জাং, ব্যাংক অব দ্য ওয়েস্টের প্রধান নির্বাহী নন্দিতা বকশী এবং প্রফেসর ইউনূস। সম্মেলনে যোগদানকারী ফ্রেসনো নগরীর মেয়র লী ব্র্যান্ড ফ্রেসনোতে গ্রামীণ আমেরিকার কর্মসূচি চালু করার জন্য প্রফেসর ইউনূসকে অভিনন্দন জানান। তিনি এই কর্মসূচিতে তাঁর সর্বাত্মক সহযোগিতার আশ্বাস দেন এবং দরিদ্র কৃষি শ্রমিক অধ্যুষিত এই নগরীতে গ্রামীণ আমেরিকার আরো শাখা স্থাপনের অনুরোধ জানান।
এই নারী সম্মেলনে সেন্ট্রাল ভ্যালি এরিয়ার প্রায় ৫০০ মহিলা অংশ নেন যাঁদের অধিকাংশই ছিলেন অশ্বেতাঙ্গ নারী উদ্যোক্তা।
