20th Anniversary Celebration of Nobel Peace Prize in East Timor

Professor Muhammad Yunus with the President of Timor Leste, Prime Minister of Timor Leste, first lady of Timor Leste, Nobel Laureate Jose Ramos Horta and other Nobel Laureates at the opening by the President of Timor Leste of the International Conference on "Citizenship, Peace and Well Being" on the occasion of 20 years of Nobel Peace Prize for Jose Ramos Horta and Bishop Carlos Ximines Belo
Nobel Laureate Professor Muhammad Yunus is in Dili Timor Leste as a Special Guest at an international conference organized by the Government of Timor Leste on "Citizenship, Peace and Well-Being" on the occasion of the 20th Anniversary of the Nobel Peace Prize award to Jose Ramos Horta and Bishop Carlos Ximenes Belo in 1996.
On October 7 morning, the conference was inaugurated by HE President Taur Matan Ruak Professor Yunus was presented at the opening ceremony of the conference along with five other Nobel Laureates present from several countries.
After the ceremony the President spoke to Prof Yunus and thanked him for coming to Timor Leste. Professor Yunus also had a discussion with Prime Minister Dr Rui Maria de Araujo and the First Lady Isable de Costa Ferreira.
Other Nobel Laureates attending the conference are Kailash Satyarthi of India, Nobel Prize in Physics Prof Brian Schmidt, Nobel Prize in Economics Profesor Finn Erling Kydland and Nobel Prize in Medicine Sir Richard John Roberts among many other international dignitaries.
Later in the day October 7, Professor Yunus participated in a plenary discussion on the conference topic on the afternoon of 7 October, and will also present his experiences with social business in a special thematic session on Economics and Finance, from which lessons for Timor Leste may be drawn. It may be mentioned that Professor Yunus came to Timor Leste in 2004 on invitation of Mr Jose Ramos Horta, then foreign minister of Timor Leste, to address a national workshop on microfinance for the country. The largest and most successful microfinance program in Timor Leste is Moris Rasik which operates throughout the island nation following Grameen methodology and which was established with technical assistance of experts from Grameen Bank in Bangladesh. It is worth mentioning that Mr Jose Ramos Horta, who served as both Prime Minister and Presidents of Timor Leste, dedicated his Nobel prize money towards microcredit in Timor Leste.

পূর্ব তিমুর সরকার আয়োজিত ১৯৯৬ সালে শান্তিত নোবেল পুরস্কার বিজয়ী জোস রামোস হোর্তা এবং বিশপ কার্লোস জিমেনেস বেলোর নোবেল বিজয়ের ২০ বছর ফুর্তি উপলক্ষে ‘নাগরিকত্ব, শান্তি ও কল্যাণ’ বিষয়ে সম্মেলনে নোবেল বিজয়ী প্রফেসর মুহাম্মদ ইউনূস বিশেষ অতিথি হিসেবে উপস্থিত ছিলেন।
৭ অক্টোবর সকালে প্রেসিডেন্ট তুর মাতান রুয়াক সম্মেলনের উদ্ভোদন করেন।উদ্ভোদন অনুষ্ঠানে প্রফেসর ইউনূস সহ বিশ্বের বিভিন্ন দেশের আরো ৫ জন নোবেল বিজয়ী উপস্থিত ছিলেন।অনুষ্ঠানের পরে প্রেসিডেন্ট প্রফেসর ইউনূসের সাথে আলাপ করেন এবং তিমুরে আসার জন্য তাকে ধন্যবাদ জ্ঞাপন করেন।
প্রফেসর ইউনূস প্রধানমন্ত্রী ড রুই মারি দে আরুজু ও ফার্স্ট লেডি ইসাবেল দে কস্তা ফেরেইরার সাথে আলোচনা করেন। অন্যন্য বিশ্ব ব্যক্তিত্বদের সাথে ভারতের নোবেল বিজয়ী কৈলাশ সত্যার্থী, পদার্থ বিজ্ঞানে নোবেল জয়ী ব্রায়ান সেমিড, অর্থনীতিতে নোবেল জয়ী প্রফেসর ফিন আরলিং কিডল্যান্ড এবং চিকিৎসায় নোবেল বিজয়ী স্যার রিচার্ড জন রবার্ট সম্মেলনে যোগদান করেন।
পরের দিন ৭ ই অক্টোবর বিকেলে প্রফেসর ইউনূস কনফারেন্স এর একটি পুর্ণাংগ আলোচনায় অংশ নেন। তিনি অর্থনীতি ও ফিন্যান্স নিয়ে আয়োজিত একটি সেশনে সামাজিক ব্যবসা নিয়ে তার অভিজ্ঞতা তুলে ধরবেন যেটি তিমুর লেস্তের জন্য কাজে লাগানো যেতে পারে।
উল্লেখ্য যে, ২০০৪ সালে মাইক্রোফিনান্সের উপর আয়জিত একটি জাতীয় সম্মেলনে বক্তৃতা করার জন্য তৎকালীন পররাষ্ট্র মন্ত্রী জোসে রামোস হোর্তার আমন্ত্রনে প্রফেসর ইউনূস তিমুর লেস্তে এসেছিলেন।
তিমুর লেস্তের সবচেয়ে বড় ও সফল মাইক্রোফিন্যান্স প্রোগ্রামটি হলো মরিস রাসিক যেটি গ্রামীণের পদ্ধতি অনুসরণ করে পুরা দ্বীপে কার্যক্রম পরিচালনা করছে এবং এটি বাংলাদেশের গ্রামীণ ব্যাংকের বিশেষজ্ঞদের সহযোগীতায় গড়ে উঠেছিল। এটি বিশেষভাবে উল্লেখ্য যে, তিমুর লেস্তের প্রধানমন্ত্রী ও প্রেসিডেন্টের দায়িত্ব পালন করা জোসে রামোস হোর্তা তার নোবেল বিজয়ের প্রাইজ মানি তিমুরের ক্ষুদ্র ঋণের জন্য উৎসর্গ করেছিলেন।
