Yunus Launches European Social Business Week in Lund, Sweden

Second European Social Business Week was held in Lund and Malmö on 12–16 May, 2014. Nobel laureate Professor Muhammad Yunus participated in the week long Forum as the chief guest. Social problems in Europe and their solutions were discussed and explored by and with academics, entrepreneurs, students, NGOs and public officials during the Week. The Week was launched by the vice Chancellor of Lund University, the largest university in Sweden with 47 thousand students, in the Medicon Village of Lund University.

The topic of this year’s European Social Business Forum was “Social Business in the European Union” which aimed to foster discussions and collaborations and enabled the participants, a rich diversity of the social economy as well as entrepreneurs and students, to share ideas and experiences.

Professor Yunus opened the forum in front of an audience 500 people with his speech on “The role of social business to exit the crisis in Europe“. By means of examples of social businesses in Bangladesh and other countries, he explained the concept of social business and the effect of every individual’s creative power to society. Through presentations, panel discussions, and workshops the Forum elaborated on the relevance and implementation of social business in Sweden and the European Union.

Nineteen New Social Business projects presented at the 15th Design Lab

The 15th Social Business Design Lab took place on May 03, 2014 at the Grameen Bank Auditorium, participated by 200 representative of national and international organizations.

At the 15th design lab, nineteen new social business plans were presented. These included eighteen Nobin Udyokta projects, businesses launched by young entrepreneurs who are the children of Grameen Bank families. The ones selected for presentation were Meghla Beauty Parlour by Morzina Akter Meghla; Dairy Foods, a social business to produce sweet meats employing members of the Santal community and implemented by Lustre; Lima Tailors, a social business selling different items of clothing and tailored products where the entrepreneur is the 18 year old Lima who is daughter of Grameen Bank members; Nimai handicrafts producing bamboo and cane related products made by a young man from Dalit community named Sree Nimai Chandra Roy; Faisal Fish Farm project implemented by a young entrepreneur named Faisal to produce 4 different types of fish in several ponds. Another Nobin Udyokta project is Meghna Carrom Board Factory was presented by Md. Yeasin who is a Grameen higher education loanee. Yeasin had a well developed business plan, and assembled a carrom board on the spot in front of the audience. This project got on the spot approval for funding by Grameen Trust.

YUNUS CENTRE AT TAIWAN UNIVERSITY

Nobel laureate Professor Muhammad Yunus visited Taiwan from April 10 to 14, at the invitation of National Central University, Taiwan and the Rotary Club of Taiwan.  A Memorandum of understanding (MoU) was ceremonially signed on 14th April, 2014 between Yunus Centre and National Central University (NCU), the prestigious 99 year old public university, in the presence of the Mayor of the County, Mr. John Chils-Yang Wu, deans, and faculty members, to create Yunus Social Business Centre (YSBC) in the NCU. The objective of the centre will be to offer courses and research facilities in social business, conduct social business design labs, conference, undertake exchange program, academic workshop, encourage and train business executives to create social businesses,  promote Yunus’s vision of creating a world without poverty and unemployment. A Director has already been appointed for the Centre and the university has allocated space for it.

Professor Yunus on behalf of Yunus Centre, and Dr. Jing-Yang Jou, President of the NC University, Taiwan signed the MOU.

Over 100 Social Businesses Produced by Design Lab

The 14th Social Business Design Lab took place on 19 April 2014 at the Grameen Bank Auditorium. Over 150 participants from national and international organizations attended in the program.

The Design Lab was chaired by Nobel Laureate Professor Muhammad Yunus. He began by welcoming the guests including those participating via live stream.

Professor Yunus then provided a summary of the projects presented at the lab so far. Of a total of 113 projects, 97 projects approved for implementation, 36 projects are operational and 54 projects received investments, getting prepared to start the business soon.

ABM-Musaদেশবরেণ্য সাংবাদিক ও ও প্রতিথযশা কলামিস্ট এবিএম মূসার মৃত্যুতে আমি গভীর শোক ও দুঃখ প্রকাশ করছি । তাঁর মৃত্যুতে উপমহাদেশের সাংবাদিকতা জগতের একটি উজ্জল নক্ষত্রের পতন হলো। শুধু বাংলাদেশ নয় - এই উপমহাদেশের সকল মানুষ তাঁর অন্তর্ধানে ব্যথিত হবে। তাকে হারানোর মধ্যে দিয়ে জাতি আজ একজন অভিভাবক হারালো। এবিএম মূসা শুধু একজন সাংবাদিকই  ছিলেননা, তিনি ছিলেন সত্য,  ন্যায় ও আদর্শের প্রতীক। তিনি অকুতোভয় সাংবাদিক ছিলেন। শক্তিধরের রক্তচক্ষুকে তিনি কখনো ভয় পাননি। সাংবাদিকতার মাধ্যমে কত সহজে মানুষের হৃদয়ে পৌছা যায় সেই দৃষ্টান্ত এবিএম মূসা আমাদের মাঝে স্থাপন করেছেন। তিনি অত্যন্ত সহজে সাধারন মানুষের ভাষায় কথা বলতেন বলে তাঁকে দেশের মানুষ অত্যন্ত আপনজন মনে করে এসেছে। তার প্রতিটি কাজেই তিনি দক্ষতা ও সাহসের পরিচয় দিয়েছেন। সাংবাদিক সমাজের অভিভাবক হিসেবে শেষ জীবনেও সত্য কথা বলে অপরিসীম সাহসিকতার পরিচয় দিয়ে গেছেন।

তিনি ছিলেন জাতির কাছে প্রচন্ড বিশ্বস্ততার প্রতীক। জাতি তাঁর কথায় ও কাজে নির্দ্বিধায় নির্ভর করতে পারতো।

তাঁকে জাতির এই দুর্দিনে হারিয়ে সবাই আমরা অসহায় বোধ করছি। তাঁর আত্মার মাগফেরাৎ কামনা করছি। তাঁর শোক সন্তপ্ত পরিবারের সদস্যদের প্রতি সমবেদনা জানাচ্ছি।
