Yunus Centre Student Interactive Program

On December 6, 2009, selected students from top private and public universities attended the first Student Interactive Program at the Yunus Centre in Dhaka.

This is the first in a series of events that will bring together the Yunus Centre, important personalities, and students to discuss social issues in Bangladesh and across the globe and means of solving them.

Professor Muhammad Yunus, Chairman of Yunus Centre, presented to the students the concept of social business. He helped guide them through questions regarding Grameen Bank, microcredit and social business.  Students took the floor and asked many pressing questions and helped steer the discussions further.

Moscow City Government Getting Ready to Introduce Social Business

The Mayor of Moscow Yuri Luzhkov has announced his decision to implement social businesses to address numerous urban social and economic problems. He had already introduced microfinance to the city of Moscow to tackle a range of social problems after the last visit of Professor Yunus in April, 2008. This announcement came after a meeting on November 17 between Professor Yunus and the Mayor. The Mayor has announced formation of a Committee headed by the Deputy Mayor which will include a representative of Professor Yunus, senior officials of the Moscow City Government, and the Russian Microfinance Center (RMC) to design and implement these social businesses. Part of the city's budget will be devoted to these projects.

Leading German Business Magnate Signs Joint Venture Agreement with Grameen to Invest In Bangladesh

Dr Michael Otto, Chairman of the Otto Group, the world’s largest mail order company, today signed an agreement with Nobel Laureate Professor Muhammad Yunus to begin a joint venture in the field of textiles in Bangladesh.

The Otto Group is a leading family-owned international trading and services corporation, led by Dr Otto, whose 123 major companies and 50,000 employees in 20 countries do business in a worldwide network. The Otto Group is the largest mail order company in the world and second only to Amazon to have the largest online marketing in the world.

Memorandum of Understanding Signed By Prof. Yunus and the Governor of Caldas, Colombia, To Bring Microfinance and Social Business to the Region

Caldas is an economically underdeveloped department in the Paisa region of Colombia. While it was once one of the country’s biggest coffee producers, it has since been experiencing a depression due to the collapse of the coffee market in the area, causing a sharp increase in unemployment.

Visit to Beijing, China

Vice President of China Xi Jinping met Nobel Laureate Professor Muhammad Yunus at his office at the Great Hall of the People in Beijing on October 30, 2009. They discussed the launching of two Grameen operated microcredit companies named as Songpan-Aba Grameen Micro-Credit Co., Ltd in the province of Sichuan and Grameen (Shangdu) Micro-Credit Co., Ltd in the province of Inner Mongolia. The two microcredit companies are at the final stage of being approved by the regulatory authority. Both will be launched in the first quarter of 2010. Chinese Government invited Professor Yunus to set up these two companies. tellyseries
