Rejoinder on Allegations Regarding Padma Bridge, Tax Evasion and Illegal Money Transfer Abroad​

Honorable Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina, in a statement made in Sweden on 15 June at Stockholm City Conference Centre while addressing a reception accorded to her by expatriate Bangladeshis, made a number of accusations and allegations against  Nobel Laureate Professor Muhammad Yunus including his alleged role “in stopping the World Bank fund for Padma Bridge project, instigating Ms Hilary Clinton to phone her after losing his Managing Director post from Grameen Bank, stealing money from Grameen Bank, not paying taxes," among others.

These false accusations and allegations have been made before and have also been responded to before. Now we are obliged to respond again.

Here are the questions raised by the Honourable Prime Minister and our responses.

গত ১৫ জুন ২০১৭ সুইডেনের স্টকহোম সিটি কনফারেন্স সেন্টারে প্রবাসী বাংলাদেশীদের প্রদত্ত একটি সংবর্ধনা অনুষ্ঠানে মাননীয় প্রধানমন্ত্রী শেখ হাসিনা তাঁর বক্তব্যে প্রফেসর মুহাম্মদ ইউনূসের বিরুদ্ধে পদ্মা সেতুর জন্য বিশ্ব ব্যাংকের ঋণ বন্ধের পেছনে প্রফেসর ইউনূসের ভূমিকা থাকা, গ্রামীণ ব্যাংকের ব্যবস্থাপনা পরিচালকের পদ হারানোর পর হিলারী ক্লিনটনকে মাননীয় প্রধানমন্ত্রীকে টেলিফোন করতে প্ররোচিত করা, গ্রামীণ ব্যাংকের অর্থ হাতিয়ে নেয়, আয়কর না দেয়া ইত্যাদি অভিযোগ করেন।

এই অসত্য অভিযোগগুলো এর আগেও তোলা হয়েছে এবং এগুলোর জবাবও প্রতিবারই দেয়া হয়েছে। আমরা আবারো এগুলোর জবাব দিচ্ছি।

প্রধানমন্ত্রী: “আমার প্রশ্ন ছিলো একজন নভেল ল্যরিয়েট হয়ে গেছে সে কেনো এমডি পদের জন্য লালায়িত? আসল মাজেজাটা এখন ধীরে ধীরে বেরুচ্ছে। এখন জানা যাচ্ছে কত টাকা তিনি ট্যাক্স ফাঁকি দিয়েছেন।”

আমাদের বক্তব্য: আমরা আগেও বলেছি যে, প্রফেসর ইউনূসের নিকট কর বিভাগের কোন কর দাবী নেই বা তাঁর কোন বকেয়া করও নেই। প্রফেসর ইউনূস বরাবরই তাঁর কর পুরোপুরি ও সময়মতো পরিশোধ করে আসছেন। তাঁর আয় ও কর সংক্রান্ত সকল তথ্য কর কর্তৃপক্ষের নিকট রয়েছে।

সরকার সন্দেহ করলেন যে, প্রফেসর ইউনূসের হয়তো কোনো গোপন আয়ের উৎস থাকতে পারে যা তিনি দেশে বা বিদেশের নানা ব্যাংকে অঘোষিত হিসাবে রেখে দিয়েছেন। পত্র-পত্রিকার মাধ্যমে দেশের মানুষকে জানিয়ে দেয়া হয় যে, তাঁর ও তাঁর স্ত্রীর উক্ত “অঘোষিত” ব্যাংক হিসাবগুলো সম্পর্কে বিদেশে ও দেশে খোঁজ-খবর নেয়ার নির্দেশ দেয়া হয়েছে। দেশের প্রতিটি ব্যাংকের প্রতিটি শাখায় তাঁর ও তাঁর স্ত্রীর ব্যাংক হিসাবের তথ্য ব্যাংকগুলোর কাছে চাওয়া হয়। এই বিপুল অনুসন্ধানের মাধ্যমে সরকার কোনো তথ্য পেয়েছে কি-না সে সম্পর্কে জাতিকে এ পর্যন্ত কোনো কিছু বলা হয়নি।

Nobel Laureate Professor Muhammad Yunus and Paris Mayor Anne Hidalgo launched the Sport Social Business Lab on June 7th; 2017.The Sport Social Business Lab is the first incubator for retired sportsmen who have a startup project with a strong social and / or environmental impact. Nobel Laureate Professor Muhammad Yunus addressed the youths at ‘We Love Green’ festival attended by 27,000 young people on 10th June, 2017. He also participated a question answer session on the specially designed ‘Think Tank Stage’. Besides two large stages for music performance, We Love Green 2017 had a Think Tank Stage which was in the middle of the festival this year, where there were discussions held on the big changes being faced by our society. As its name suggests, the festival is powered with 100% renewable energy, and 100% of their waste is recycled and composted.

The youth engaged with Professor Yunus during the Q/A session at the festival which is co-organized also by the office of City Mayor of Paris. He called on the youth to take the challenge of building the world of their vision with their own hands. This festival puts the emphasis on music and eco-responsibility. It has become an unmissable springtime musical event in Europe. This year, the festival was held in the natural setting of the Bois de Vincennes, located on the eastern edge of Paris. It is the largest public park in the city, sprawling over 14 acres of natural wilderness . It was created between 1855 and 1866 by the Emperor Napoleon III.

During his visit to France, Mayor of Paris, Ms Anne Hidalgo organized a high profile meeting at the magnificent city hall. During the meeting, they reviewed the Olympic Bid of Paris and also about the preparation of Global Social Business Summit (GSBS) which is scheduled to be held in Paris on 6-7 November, 2017. Professor Yunus later attended the final selection event of a very special social business design competition where sportsmen and sportswomen designed social business to come up with solutions for the problems in the sports world. The social business incubator was launched at Les Canaux on June 5, 2017

Later he addressed about 75 top level CEOs of leading French companies in Versailles and presented the vision of three zeroes and how they can get involved, in an event organized by the Boston Consulting Group. 

Professor Yunus also attended the final meeting of the joint venture initiative between Global Agribusiness giant, McCain of Canada and Yunus Social Business.  The social business joint venture will be launched in Casablanca, Morocco in the presence of Professor Yunus on November 2, 2017.

Wealth concentration is a ticking time bomb :Yunus warns members of European Parliament

Nobel Laureate Professor Muhammad Yunus with the UN SDG advocates at the European Development days in Brussels including prime minister Erna Solberg of Norway, Her Majesty  Queen Mathilde of Belgium, Alaa Murabit, Professor Jeffrey Sachs, Ms. Amina J. Mohammed Deputy Secretary-General of the United Nations, Nana Akufo-Addo President of Ghana and others.

Nobel Laureate Professor Muhammad Yunus addressed over one hundred members of the European Parliament in Brussels, who assembled to hear him and Erna Solberg , Prime Minister of Norway, and two  other speakers invited by the  European Parliament's parliamentary committee   on international development. Yunus told the parliament members that wealth concentration is getting worse every day. That it is no longer a matter of wealth inequality, it has become wealth monopoly.  Unless we redesign the present capitalist system the system will explode. It has become a ticking time bomb. Yunus   was attending the European Development Days conference as a participant in the global debate where there were 120 sessions, 7,000 participants from around the world .  Yunus spoke at five   different official sessions at the event and presented his idea of social business and three zeroes. Speaking at the session on "Nobody should be left behind” he said the present system is built precisely to leave 99 percent of people behind, and keep them behind, and is not capable of doing it other way. He proposed the ways in which the present system can be changed.

Six New Business Launched at  583rd Social Business Design Lab

The 583rd  Social Business Design Lab organized by Yunus Centre took place on 17th May 2017 at the Grameen Bank Auditorium with nearly 150 national and international participants from India, Japan, USA, Brazil and Singapore. The Design Lab was chaired by Nobel Laureate Professor Muhammad Yunus.

Six new Nobin Udyokta (or New Entrepreneur) business plans were presented at today's Lab. The business plans included two tailoring shops, two poultry farms, one leather item producing shop and a fancy shop.
