Grameen Shokti (Energy)
Only 30% population is receiving grid electricity in Bangladesh i.e. vast majorities (70%) are deprived of conventional electricity. Children's education, business and trade, agricultural productions are interrupted due to shortage of power. There is no possibility of connecting all the homes of remote villages and isolated areas, business centres and other establishments, to grid system in the near future. This prevents rural people harnessing their full potential. Renewable energy could be an efective alternative to fulfill the demand for electricity. By having electricity households and micro-enterprises can enormously benefit through: | extending working hours | | extending selling & shopping hours in the rural areas | | increasing income from women-led micro-enterprises include basket making, electronics repair, carpentry workshops, tailoring, stores, fish net weaving, and so on | | developing local technical retailers including local expertise in selling, maintaining, and repairing electrical components | | facilitating children's education, women's welfare, recreational activities, income generation of the rural households | | Extending education, health benefits to end the cycle of poverty |
"Grameen Shakti" (GS) came into existence in June 1996 as an renewable energy company. Source: Grameen Info>Grameen Shakti. Please visit Grameen Shakti official website for more information.
