Honorary Doctor of Law degree from University of British Columbia
March 14, 2008
Professor Muhammad Yunus received an honorary
Doctor of Law degree in a ceremony at the University of British
Columbia when he came to inaugurate the Michael Smith Nobel Lecture.
Over 3000 people attended the numerous events in the day long program.
The degree ceremony started with Bangladesh and Canada's national
anthems, folk songs and traditional dances. Flags were also hoisted to
mark the occasion.
Professor Yunus met with professors, deans
and community leaders, including the former Premier of British Columbia
and national Health Minister and numerous policy makers. He called upon
his audience to ensure that the academic community create a poverty
free world so that the next generation is free from poverty and social
injustice. His new book, Creating A World Without Poverty: Social
Business and the Future of Capitalism, was sold through the course of
the day. Thousands of books were sold in one event alone, with
Professor Yunus signing over 600 of them. The program was a great
success, with university students and youth groups honoring Professor
Yunus with the title "Global Agent of Change".
